A. The Command to Joshua (1:1–9) Almost without interruption the narrative of Joshua picks up from the end of Deuteronomy. Moses had died (Deut. 34:5–8) and the mantle of leadership had fallen on Joshua (Josh. 1:9; see also Num. 27:18–20, 23; Deut. 31:7–8, 14, 23). It was his task now to take the nation across the river, something that would be easily done, for the Lord would be with him as He had been with Moses (Josh. 1:5).
